御成門交差点よりパナソニックの大きな看板のある建物を左手に見て進むと右手が日本赤十字社になる。
赤十字社は傷病者、捕虜などに関するジュネーブ条約により承認された国際機関で、敵味方の差別をせず中立で人道的な見地から救護を進めることを目的とする。日本赤十字社の前身は西南戦争の悲惨な状況を見て設立された博愛社で、１８８６年に日本のジュネーブ条約への参加により日本赤十字社になった。現在の日本赤十字社は献血運動以外に災害時のボランティア活動なども行い、ボランティアの募集も行っている。

The Red Cross is an international
organization recognized under the Geneva Conventions concerning the sick,
wounded, and prisoners of war. Its purpose is to provide relief from a neutral
and humanitarian standpoint, without discrimination between friend or foe. The
predecessor of the Japanese Red Cross Society was the Hakuaisha (Philanthropic
Society), established in response to the tragic conditions of the Satsuma
Rebellion; it became the Japanese Red Cross Society in 1886 when Japan joined
the Geneva Convention. Today, in addition to blood donation campaigns, the
Japanese Red Cross Society engages in disaster relief and volunteer activities,
and actively recruits volunteers.
東日本大震災義援金受付
義援金は各郵便局で日本赤十字社への払い込みにより行われているが、日本赤十字社に直接持って行くことも出来る。日本赤十字社では現金受け取りと引き換えに「寄付承り書」に金額を記載して渡してくれる。その後受領書が郵送されてくるので、この受領書を確定申告の際に提出すると特例として全額住民税の税額控除になる。（通常の赤十字社への寄付は所得控除）日本赤十字社では義援金として寄付を行った人と、日本赤十字社の社員との写真撮影も行えるとのこと。
